Money and payments

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, tipping is not part of the culture, and there is no need to carry much cash.

💡 Quick tips
  • Tipping is not expected — not in restaurants, taxis or hotels.
  • Keep a little cash for street food, traditional markets and T-money top-ups.
  • Many restaurants are pay-at-the-counter on your way out.

The currency is the Korean won (KRW, ₩).

Cards

Credit and debit cards are accepted in shops, restaurants, taxis and even small cafes. Contactless payment is common.

Cash

You will occasionally need cash: street food stalls, some traditional markets, and topping up a T-money card. ATMs marked “Global” or located in convenience stores and banks accept foreign cards.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary. Prices already include service, and leaving money on the table may confuse staff.

Paying at restaurants

In many Korean restaurants you pay at the counter on your way out rather than at the table. Take the bill (or just your table number) to the cashier. When a group eats together, one person often pays for everyone — if a Korean friend insists on treating you, it is polite to get the next round or coffee.
