Gwangjang Market opened in the early 1900s and is one of Seoul’s oldest traditional markets. It was once best known for fabrics and bedding, but today the food alley at its heart is a must for visitors.
What to eat
- Bindaetteok (빈대떡) — thick, crispy pancakes of ground mung beans, great with makgeolli (rice wine).
- Yukhoe (육회) — seasoned raw beef served with sliced pear.
- Mayak gimbap (마약김밥) — finger-sized gimbap rolls dipped in mustard sauce.
- Kalguksu, tteokbokki and sundae — knife-cut noodles and snacks cooked right at the stalls.
Around the market
Upstairs, a vintage clothing arcade draws young shoppers. Walk along Cheonggyecheon Stream or continue on to Dongdaemun. The nearest stations are Jongno 5(o)-ga (Line 1) and Euljiro 4(sa)-ga (Lines 2 and 5).
