Hahoe is a traditional village where the Ryu clan of Pungsan has lived for centuries. Its name describes the way the Nakdonggang River curls around it, and together with Yangdong Village in Gyeongju it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
Highlights
- Buyongdae — a cliff across the river. From the top, you see the whole village sitting inside the river’s bend.
- Yangjindang and Chunghyodang — two of the village’s grand old family houses.
- Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori — the famous Hahoe mask dance, performed regularly in the village.
Good to know
People still live here, so walk quietly and respect private homes. A shuttle bus runs from the entrance parking area. While in Andong, try local dishes such as Andong jjimdak (braised chicken) and salted mackerel.
