💡 Good to know
  • Independent visits are not allowed — join a registered tour and book ahead.
  • Bring your passport; IDs are checked at military checkpoints.
  • Some sites, especially the JSA, can close at short notice — check before you go.

The Demilitarized Zone is a strip of land about 4 km wide that has separated the two Koreas since the armistice of 1953. Visiting gives a powerful sense of the country’s modern history.

What tours usually include

  • Imjingak — a park and observation area near the border, often the starting point.
  • The Third Infiltration Tunnel — a tunnel dug from the North, which visitors can walk into.
  • Dora Observatory — where you can look across into North Korea on a clear day.

Practical points

  • You must join a registered tour; independent visits are not allowed.
  • Bring your passport and follow your guide’s dress and photography rules.
  • Programs change with the political situation, so check official information before booking.
