Namhansanseong is a Joseon-era fortress wrapped around a mountaintop southeast of Seoul. In 1636, during the Qing invasion, King Injo took refuge here and held out for weeks. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
What to see
- The wall trail — a path along the ridge-top walls through pine forest, passing gates and command posts.
- Namhansanseong Haenggung — a temporary palace where the king could stay in times of crisis, now restored and open to visitors.
Good to know
It is reachable by bus from Seoul, making it a good half-day trip. Have a meal in the village inside the walls, then walk to a viewpoint on the wall to watch the sun set over the city.
