Korean barbecue is less a dish than an evening. A grill sits in the middle of the table, the meat cooks in front of you, and the meal goes on with conversation and drinks.
What to order
- Samgyeopsal (삼겹살) — thick slices of pork belly. The most popular choice.
- Galbi (갈비) — marinated beef or pork ribs, sweet and savory.
- Bulgogi (불고기) — thin marinated beef, mild and great for first-timers.
How to eat it
Take a lettuce leaf, add a piece of meat, a little ssamjang (thick spicy-sweet bean paste), maybe some grilled garlic or kimchi, wrap it up and eat it in one bite. This is called a ssam (쌈). Many people finish with naengmyeon (cold noodles) or doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) with rice.
