Gamcheon began as a settlement of refugees who built homes on this steep hillside during the Korean War. Houses were stepped up the slope so that no home blocked the view of the one behind it — which created the village’s unique terraced look.
What to see
Since 2009, artists and residents have worked together to fill the alleys with murals, sculptures and small galleries. The Little Prince and the Fox sculpture, gazing out over the rooftops, is the most famous photo spot.
Good to know
This is a residential neighborhood: keep your voice down and don’t photograph inside homes. The lanes are steep and full of stairs, so comfortable shoes help.
