Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak)

A giant crater rising straight out of the sea. Sunrise from the rim, and spring views over yellow canola fields, have made it the symbol of Jeju.

💡 Good to know
  • The stairs to the crater rim take about 20–30 minutes.
  • New Year's Day sunrise draws huge crowds.
  • Many visitors combine it with a ferry trip to nearby Udo Island.
📷 Photo tips
  • From Gwangchigi Beach, the whole peak fits in one frame.
  • In spring, use the canola flower fields as a foreground.
  • At low tide, moss-green lava rocks appear on Gwangchigi Beach.

Seongsan Ilchulbong was formed by an eruption under the sea. At the top is a huge bowl-shaped crater about 600 m across, and it is part of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

When to go

As the name (“Sunrise Peak”) suggests, it is famous for sunrise. In spring the fields around it turn yellow with canola flowers — a postcard view. On the way up, turn around for views over Seongsan village and the sea.

Make it a Jeju trip

Jeju is a volcanic island with a mild climate and a culture of its own, about an hour’s flight from Gimpo Airport. With Hallasan, crater hills and the Jeju Olle walking trails that circle the island, it is best with two days or more. Renting a car (with an international driving permit) is the easiest way to get around.
