💡 Good to know
  • The last stretch to Baegundae is bare granite with handrails — wear shoes with good grip.
  • Weekend mornings are very busy; go on a weekday or start early.
  • Some trails close during spring and autumn fire-prevention periods — check the Korea National Park Service site.
📷 Photo tips
  • From Baegundae, frame the sheer face of Insubong with the city behind it.
  • In autumn, the valley trail below the old fortress walls glows with color.

Bukhansan is the national park that wraps around northern Seoul. Its highest peak, Baegundae (836 m), rises among dramatic granite domes such as Insubong, and the walls of Bukhansanseong Fortress, built in the Joseon era, follow the ridges. Because it is just a subway and bus ride from downtown, it is Seoul’s favorite mountain.

Trails

  • Baegundae route — the classic climb from the Bukhansanseong trailhead or from Ui-dong. The final section is a steep rock slope with steel cables to hold.
  • Bukhansan Dulle-gil — a gentle trail that circles the foot of the mountain, perfect if you want forest views without the climb.

Good to know

The granite gets very slippery after rain or snow. Bring water and snacks, and plan to be off the mountain before dark. You will notice how well-equipped Korean hikers are — hiking is a national pastime.
