The Donggang (“East River”) flows between Jeongseon and Yeongwol in Gangwon-do, coiling like a snake between steep mountains and limestone cliffs. Largely untouched, it is protected for its ecology — and in summer it is one of Korea’s favorite places for white-water rafting.
How to enjoy it
- Rafting — paddle down the rapids together in a group boat; guides make it easy for first-timers.
- Riverside drives and walks — take in the cliffs and bends at a slower pace.
Nearby
In Yeongwol, visit Cheongnyeongpo, where the young King Danjong was exiled, and the viewpoint over a river bend shaped like the Korean Peninsula.
