Jirisan is a vast mountain spanning three provinces, and in 1967 it became Korea’s very first national park. Its highest peak, Cheonwangbong (1,915 m), is the tallest on the South Korean mainland. A mountain this big has deep valleys, and Baemsagol on the Namwon side is the classic: crystal-clear water, wide flat rocks and pool after pool.
How to enjoy it
- Baemsagol Valley trail — a gentle walk along the stream, cool in summer and colorful in autumn.
- Jirisan Dulle-gil — a long walking trail linking villages around the foot of the mountain; pick one section for a day.
Good to know
During the summer monsoon and after typhoons, streams can rise suddenly. Check trail closures with the national park before you go.
