💡 Good to know
  • The two summit trails (Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa) require an advance online reservation.
  • Summit hikes take a full day; start early and respect the checkpoint cut-off times.
  • The Yeongsil and Eorimok trails to Witse-oreum are shorter and still stunning — no summit needed.
📷 Photo tips
  • In winter, look for frost-covered Korean fir forests.
  • On the Yeongsil trail, frame the cliffs with the volcanic cones and sea beyond.

Hallasan (1,947 m) is the volcano at the heart of Jeju Island and the highest mountain in South Korea. At the top lies Baengnokdam, a summit crater, and the island around it is dotted with hundreds of small volcanic cones called oreum. It is part of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

Choosing a trail

  • Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa — the two routes to the summit crater. Both need an advance reservation and take a full day.
  • Yeongsil or Eorimok — shorter climbs to Witse-oreum, with cliffs, alpine meadows and sea views. A great choice for most visitors.

Good to know

Mountain weather is very different from the coast. In winter, crampons or microspikes are essential, and trails close in bad weather. Check the Hallasan National Park website before you go.
