💡 Good to know
  • Quieter than Bukchon — great for a slow wander through the lanes.
  • Grab a market lunch at Tongin Market.
  • At the top of the neighborhood, Suseong-dong Valley leads onto the Inwangsan trails.

Seochon, meaning “west village”, is the name for the old neighborhood just west of Gyeongbokgung Palace, at the foot of Inwangsan mountain. Old hanok and alley eateries remain, with small bookshops, galleries and cafes tucked in between. It is calmer than Bukchon and perfect for a slow neighborhood walk.

What to see

  • Tongin Market — a small local market where you can try simple market snacks for lunch.
  • Suseong-dong Valley — a rocky stream at the top of the neighborhood, painted by Joseon-era artists, and a gateway to the Inwangsan trails.
  • The back lanes — step one block off the main road and you’ll find old houses and tiny shops.

Getting there

Start from Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3) and walk west into the neighborhood.
